Choosing the right keyphrases for the smaller site

A cracking post at SEOMoz involving use of their Keyword Difficulty Tool for webmasters in both "camps".

There are really two separate and distinct camps on keyphrase research implementation: those who always go for the highest volume search terms that are moderately relevant to a page and those that also give consideration to the competitive landscape for a certain term.
Do you use the Keyword Difficult Tool? Problem is it's subscription only - $79 pm. Anyone here subscribed (or using the free 30 day trial)?

Actually, I am surprised a bit. I get the feeling that a lot of webmasters hear about all these tools but not many of them shell out money to buy them.

Thanks for the offer Rich, I may take you up on it. In the meanwhile, what are your own impressions of the service. Is it worth forking out $79 per month?

Absolutely, it reduces tasks that could otherwise take hours to a couple of minutes work. If you're not knowledgeable enough to judge the competitiveness of a keyword phrase yourself it does that for you and that on it's own is worth £50 a month IMO.

Something like this is a must for anyone who does SEO and these guys know their business. It even has a term extractor which would be perfect for Ajeet. I think it's great for the money.

i've just bought the Micro niche finder. It has a function called SOC ie strength of competition where you can measure the competitiveness of a keyword given the PRs and backlinks of the websites on the search result for a given keyword. I've just tested it and have yet to find any significant results so far

I find the competitiveness score in Micro Niche Finder to be misleading. I hear a lot of people say they rely on it but I am ranking EMDs to the first page in days with a $5 link wheel which are apparently massively competitive.

That could be a new site boost, how long are those rankings lasting?
